The CZ 457 American: A Full-Sized Rimfire for the Serious Hunter

For every hunter, a .22 rifle isn’t just a tool: it’s a staple. It was likely the first gun we ever held, and if we’re honest, it’s probably the one we shoot the most throughout our lives. Whether you’re training in the off-season, plinking for fun or thinning out small game, the humble rimfire is the backbone of a well-rounded gun collection.

Because we spend so much time behind a .22, it stands to reason that you should own a good one. After extensive research into the current market of bolt-action rifles, I settled on the CZ 457 American. It is a rifle that respects the shooter, offering a build quality and scale that many other rimfires simply ignore.

A “Real” Rifle in a Rimfire Caliber

The most striking thing about the CZ 457 American is its heft and scale. Many manufacturers treat the .22 LR as a “youth” or “budget” category, resulting in rifles that feel undersized, flimsy, or overly “plastic.”

The 457 American, however, feels like a full-size hunting rifle. In terms of weight, length, and ergonomics, it mimics the feel of a high-caliber centerfire bolt gun. When you shoulder it, the Turkish walnut stock and the 24 inch barrel provide a balance and “swing” that you won’t find in a lightweight carbine. This makes it an incredible training tool; the muscle memory you develop with this rifle translates directly to your big-game hunts.

CZ 457 American 5 Round Clip
Overall performance is top-tier, but the magazine leaves a little room for improvement. The single-stack design means even the 5-round clip sticks out past the gun, whereas a flush-fit rotary magazine would hold more rounds and be much better for a rifle meant to be carried all day.

A Configuration for Every Shooter

It is worth noting that the CZ 457 series comes in a wide variety of configurations to suit different needs, ranging from the clinical, chassis-bound Varmint Precision models to the compact Scout and the iron-sighted Lux. While there are many specialized options in the lineup, I chose the American model specifically for its classic sensibilities. The traditional Turkish walnut stock isn’t just about looks; it features a high, straight comb designed specifically for use with a scope, providing a perfect cheek weld that mirrors a high-end centerfire hunting setup.

Range Performance: Match Grade Accuracy

The heart of this rifle is its cold hammer-forged, match-grade barrel. During my testing, I took it to the range with standard Federal ammunition. This wasn’t high-end match loads, just everyday rounds.

Even with a fairly stiff wind (which is never ideal for a light .22 caliber bullet), I was consistently grouping at 1.5 inches at 100 yards after sighting in. Frankly, I believe the rifle shoots a heck of a lot better than I was performing that day. The accuracy floor for this gun is remarkably high, thanks in large part to the new adjustable trigger system which allows you to fine-tune the weight and creep to your liking.

I appreciate the easy to use safety and the cocked indicator in the rear of the receiver.

A Note on Maintenance and Tight Tolerances

Because CZ uses a true match-grade chamber and barrel, the tolerances are much tighter than your average farm-store plinker. One thing you will quickly notice is that a standard .22 caliber Dewey coated cleaning rod will not fit the bore. The protective coating on the rod is thick enough that it will come into contact with the precision rifling.

Buyer’s Tip: To protect your investment, don’t force a standard rod. You’ll want to pick up a .20 caliber or even a .17 caliber cleaning rod, along with a .20 caliber jag and brush. This ensures you can clean the barrel properly without any risk of damaging the bore.

The walnut stock on the 457 is above average quality for the price point.

The Setup: Finishing Touches

To compliment the classic lines of the walnut stock, I chose components that emphasize both strength and traditional aesthetics:

  • Optics: I topped it with a 3X9 Leupold VX-Freedom Rimfire .22 MOA scope. In my opinion, this is the perfect glass for this rifle—rugged, clear, and specifically calibrated for rimfire distances.
  • Rings & Mounts: I used my go-to Talley Signature Rings. I love the look and the sheer strength of these integrated rings and bases. They clamp solidly onto the receiver’s dovetail, ensuring the zero never shifts.
  • Accessories: I finished setting up the gun with a high-quality leather sling from Detroit Leather Shop which is the perfect complement to the rifle.
